|Joffan ||Gotta have G|
Hey it's me! sorry for the long absence...
|Jun 12, 2006 4:09 AM||It's All Fun & Games -> Hangman -> post#3930|
|Joffan ||Yeah, it's not hard. I've got a saved game with an impossibly tough castle and 200 each of archers, mages and carpenters. |
You have to survive the fist few rounds, buy a temple, convert people then train them in the trades above.
The main thing to know is that your trained people will only die if you don't keep back enough resource to feed them. Nothing else kills them (except the castle's destruction of course).
The other handy thing to know is that the wizards spells are keyed to "1", "2" and "3". And that the bombers are killed by the conversion spell ("3"), killing stuff around them.

|Joffan ||L, with good intentions. |

|Joffan ||Yeah - like that. Nice. The extra space doesn't even need to be that wide, but it looks good. |

|Joffan ||I guess they're selling the convenience of not going to the drinks machine so often. |

|Joffan ||That's a recursive acronym, which is nice too, although they are much rarer.|
RAS syndrome is the habit of using one of the words in the acronym with the acronym, so if the full phrase were used in place of the acronym there would be inane duplication.
So PIN is Personal identification Number, and "PIN number" shows the duplication required for RAS syndrome. I'm pretty sure I saw "personal PIN number" somewhere-or-other.
RAS is Redundant Acronym Syndrome, and "RAS syndrome" is its self-referential overspecification.
And "FUBAR'd beyond all recognition" duplicates an impressive three words.

|Joffan ||Problem using your beloved "quote new" button... |
When I used this on swampbear's post in Hangman it seemed to work fine but on returning to the Hangman thread, swampbear's post had been duplicated.
|May 10, 2006 6:38 PM||Forum Issues -> Bug list and general board stuff... -> post#2520|
|Joffan ||Inspired by swampbear in the Hangman thread:|
|Ok, it appears I have FUBARed this quote beyond all recognition.|
I thought we could collect examples of RAS syndrome . At least swampbear's quote wasn't FUBAR'd up beyond all recognition.
Here's an easy example in everyday use:

|Joffan ||Hey umop, can you modify the borders between posts, or between the post and its status line, so that it's clearer (in the middle of a thread) which post owns which status? I keep pressing the wrong quote button....|
|May 10, 2006 5:21 PM||Forum Issues -> Format suggestion -> post#2506|
|Joffan ||While I admire your diligence in putting guessed letters in by hand, there used to be another "t" in that last word... |
call me picky if you will.
PS: Nasty case of RAS syndrome you have there. "FUBAR'd beyond all recognition"?

|Joffan ||So even if another post has been added to the thread after mine, I can still edit if it's within 5 mins and not show "edited"?|
ETA: and yes I understood "ETA" but I was checking whether I had perhaps misunderstood the contents of the edit.
ETA: does the 5 minutes count from the first posting or the most recent edit?
ETA: I'll probably find out the answer to the above now... but anyway ETA to me always used to mean "Expected Time of Arrival".
|May 9, 2006 11:41 PM||Forum Issues -> Time limits for editing posts -> post#2490|
|Joffan ||Is it my imagination or has that changed somewhat from the first posting? First word gone and second last in the quote appeared? Or is that what your ETA means?|
