Close enough. It was the remake which was named The Bird Cage, but it's the same thing.

eta a hint:
Peter Falk had a supporting role in this film - and one of his scenes housed an unintentional harbinger
of course, I may be the only one who saw it that way

Hmmmmmm..... The In-Laws? Ok, I don't remember that from The In-Laws but Peter Falk was in it and I think the movie's a hoot.

yeah, actually both versions are pretty hilarious - but that's not the answer.  Another hint: this movie was the first for a certain leggy redhead.

Ok, I don't have a guess right now, I just could not resist postin' that.

said redhead later went on to star in a movie of a popular Broadway musical of the same decade, a musical that has since become a staple of high school drama clubs everywhere

I am referring to a scene about 2/3rds in, Falk and the other minion are waiting for Ford to return from a visit to Apple Annie so they can go meet with the Chicago boss.  Minion brings lunch in for them and hand something to Falk and says "Here's your yogurt".
I made the unlikely connection
Falk eats yogurt. Colombo makes yogurt. Falk plays Columbo (okay it's spelled differently, but my brain made the connection anyway)
