The Martinez Demon Dog Photo Explained

This photograph was taken in 1999 of Joe and Patty Martinez in Colorado at a 50th wedding anniversary party.

Now I will admit this is fuckin creepy! This is the kind of photo that, if I get up in the middle of the night to piss, and something reminds me of this image, I will straight up cover my eyes, fumble my way blindly back to bed, and pull the blankets over my face. This is SPOOKY.

No animals were in the house at the time, well, except there were humans and that's a species of animal. But there were no pets, livestock, or wildlife in the house at that time. Oh, there could have been insects, and of course, you're never more than six feet from a spider, and those are wildlife. But there was definitely no dog present. So WTF is this damn creepy animal face doing here? Holy crap!

However, what we have here isn't a photo of a demon, or Satan, or a ghost, or a cryptid, or a hellhound, or even a flesh and blood dog. Although some people say it looks more like a goat. But it isn't a living breathing goat either. This photo is, in fact, an amazing coincidence of mundane objects, an example of pareidolia, the same phenomenon that causes us to see faces in clouds. And I'm about to explain it away.

Before I go on — yes, it's true that Martinez was deep into drug addiction and seeing this image scared him clean. Getting over ANY addiction is a good thing, no matter the means, and it's wonderful that he got cleaned up. I don't dispute that one whit. Whether this photo depicts a real demon, or a divine intervention, or a physical animal, or a painting, or an album cover, or marsh gas, or the planet Venus, or a bizarre juxtaposition, doesn't change the fact that it has had a positive effect on his life. That said — it's a bizarre juxtaposition.

Layers of Coincidence

Here is just the most zoomed in panel of the "demon". It appears over Martinez' left shoulder, which he associates with the side of evil, because left and right are opposites and therefore of course they have to be culturally associated with good and evil in a large number of world cultures. Okay, whatever. Humans suck. There was always a 50/50 chance that, were something like this to happen, it would coincide with society's damn silly superstitions that we all get drilled into us when we're kids, so that just means that's part of the coincidence.

Behind the couple, in the distance, is a potted plant, whose branches and leaves are flowing down from the pot. In places, the foliage can be seen passing in front of the spokes of a railing that seems to be part of a staircase.

Now I'm going to deconstruct the image piece by piece and reveal what the "demon" is actually made up of.

The Plant

Many of the pixels of the "demon" are in fact the same color and texture as the plant that's visible in the background. Here I have created a new layer, duplicated from the original photo. I've erased every pixel that isn't foliage from the layer, and boosted the green channel. Next to this is an image of only the plant. You can see that the plant accounts for most of the "face". In particular, two fronds that are hanging down happen to sport pairs of leaves that form eye-shaped arrangements at about the same height. Already, most of the illusion is canceled out at this point.

The Cake

I've created another layer for just the pixels that are part of the cake, and turned them white. If you refer back to the first image at the top of this page, you can see that the cake is decorated. The white "teeth", red "tongue", and black "lip" are all colors that appear as part of the cake decorations, therefore it is almost certain that these elements are from another piece of the cake that's mostly hidden behind Martinez' shoulder.

Alternatively, they could be wrapped gifts on the table beside the cake.

A Bottle? Or Some Kind of Bracket?

Finally, I've isolated one last part of the image, a blue shape that makes up the "nose" and "upper lip". So lemme pause here and say that actually, yes there is something mysterious in the photo. But that's only because it isn't possible to tell what this blue object is. However, I am certain it is something manmade. It could be the top of a fancy bottle, although at least one person has said it looks like a wall bracket.

With these layers added and the three objects identified, the illusion is now completely gone. We can see wallpaper in the background that made up the "cheek" and "brow" of the pareidolia. We can see the railing spoke, which some people have interpreted as an upright "ear", along with Martinez' own ear on the opposite side. But we see no demon, no hellhound, no dog, and no goat. Just a closeup of a smiling man standing in front of a cake and some gifts at a wedding anniversary.

So In Conclusion, The End

In summary, the Martinez demon dog photo is eerie, remarkable, and strange. But not because it depicts anything supernatural. In fact, it is a one-in-a-billion superposition of ordinary objects that happens to look like a scary creature. Every object in the photo had to be shaped exactly right and positioned exactly right, and the couple and the camera had to be in exactly the right place, for this image to happen. The laws of probability say that unusual occurrences like this should happen very rarely, and indeed, it has happened once. And if you still don't believe me that the phenomenon of pareidolia explains an image as striking as the demon dog, I present:
